Background

The Internet Service Providers' Association (ISPA) currently operates one Internet exchange point, namely the Johannesburg Internet exchange (JINX). Previously the Cape Town Internet exchange (CINX) was also available but due to lack of support was suspended. These Internet exchanges (INXes) provide a mechanism for ISPA's members to interconnect their networks and exchange traffic. The exchanges encourage the local routing of Internet traffic not destined for international locations.

About this information

This information represents ISPA's policies and procedures regarding its INXes. It supersedes all previously published INX policy documents.

Connecting to the INXes

In order to connect to JINX, you must have been a member of ISPA for at least one month. Membership of ISPA is open to any Internet service provider in Southern Africa. All members of ISPA may connect to JINX with medium-sized members being restricted to connections of up to 512 kbps at JINX and small members being restricted to connections of up to 128 kbps. Details of membership fees and other costs associated with JINX are provided below.

ISPs outside of South Africa but within Southern Africa may join ISPA as non-voting international members. They have the same access to the INXes and pay the same fees as other members of their size.
